Case History

Save The Blue Frog was originally designed as a teaching case for CPA bound students at a collegiate public accounting degree program. Developed with the input of a senior partner at a Big Four global accounting firm, it utilized a construction project scenario in the energy industry to teach advanced concepts regarding financial valuation, sustainability, internal controls and enterprise risk management, and ethics & morality.

The blue frog serves as a metaphor for volatile factors that cause significant variations in an entity’s long-term sustainable value. While the proverbial “black swan” of Black Swan Theory generally addresses uncontrollable events with negative value implications, the blue frog is designed to address partially manageable events with positive or negative value implications. Thus, in a sense, the blue frog represents an extension of the Black Swan.

The case has been expanded into a group-based educational game, with learners playing the roles of different characters and interacting with each other to produce group decisions and influence individual decisions. Artificial Intelligence platforms are utilized to function as virtual interactive characters, as learners acquire and apply knowledge regarding various communication, negotiation, and technology utilization theories and strategies.

Numerous versions of the case and game have been customized for corporations, trade associations, universities, and other academic and business education organizations during the past fifteen years. Creatures and organisms such as the grunion, the bat, and the elm tree have substituted for the blue frog, while concepts and practices such as Critical Thinking and The Scientific Method have been added to its procedural complexity.
